What is male infertility?
The inability to become a parent causes a lot of stress and frustration for any couple. Although it has long been considered that this problem is related to women, the truth is that in 40-50% of cases the male partner is involved.
The term male infertility is used by a doctor if a man fails to leave a fertile woman pregnant after at least 1 year of trying (unprotected sexual contact) and statistically affects about 7% of men. Studies suggest that after a year of unprotected sex, 15% of couples cannot conceive a child, this percentage reaching 10% after 2 years of trying. In terms of age, couples under the age of 30 who are in good health manage to become parents in the first 3 months in a proportion ranging between 20 to 37%.
The causes of male infertility are mainly related to sperm problems, sperm quality being a tool for measuring fertility in men. To conceive a child, the man’s sperm must combine with the woman’s egg. The testicles produce and store sperm, which are ejaculated by the penis, the sperm being transported to the woman’s reproductive tract during intercourse. The most common problems that lead to infertility in men concern the functioning of the testicles, as well as hormonal imbalances or blockages in the male reproductive organs. In about 50% of cases the cause of infertility cannot be determined, this being called idiopathic infertility.
